How to Tastefully Use Leather in Your Living Room

Adding leather to your living room can be done in a variety of ways. Leather couches are undeniably comfortable, but an easier way to add a touch of class is to use a club chair. These are not only comfortable, they are attractive and allow for easy decorating. Using leather in your living room can be fun, and it will make your space more inviting. Here are some tips on incorporating leather into your decor.

Choose your Colors

Before you buy any leather furniture, decide on an overall color scheme. This is the first and biggest step in tying together the look of your living room, as combining too many different colors can lead to a serious clash. Depending on your home's design, one color may be better than another; color choice can also depend on your personal preference.

Get Modular

To tastefully decorate using leather, consider buying modular furniture. It can be arranged and rearranged in a variety of ways, and this type of furnishing tends to cost less than buying comparable, separate pieces. The kind of modular set you buy will depend mostly upon the size of your living room and the layout of your home.

Use your Leather as Decorating Inspiration

Decorating around your leather living room furniture is one of the best ways to make it look good, and the process will depend mostly upon the color of the furniture. Try to choose a color scheme and stick with it, incorporating styling cues (like Victorian doors) that catch the eye. Leather furnishings look best in a minimalist décor, so choose just a few elements that complement it. Keeping it simple will help you end up with a tasteful, inviting space.

Choose Soft Fabrics

Leather furniture adds a bold, rugged look to your living room, so try to soften it up a little with some plush fabric. Hang sheer, gauzy curtains, or drape a soft blanket over a leather couch or chair. If you have wood flooring or oak doors, use fluffy throw rugs to add more warmth to your space.

Wood is Good

Wooden tables, oak doors, and other décor will help to balance out those heavier leather furnishings. Use dark brown leather and cherry or maple wood tables to create a classy, library-like atmosphere, or lighten up your space by choosing tables and desks made of lighter-colored woods.

Leather furniture can lend a tasteful, elegant look to your living room. It's durable, attractive, and a great choice for families with small children and pets. To decorate around your leather furnishings, choose varied textures like wood and soft fabric, along with a few splashes of color.

How To Protect Leather Office Furniture

Leather is a durable choice for your office furniture. But it does require a little bit of love from time to time to maintain its beautiful look. Here are some suggestions on how to protect your leather office furniture so that it will last you many years in an office environment.

Step 1

Clean up stains immediately. The most important tip for cleaning and protecting your leather office furniture is to clean up any spills and stains right away. Don't give it a chance to soak into the fibers of the leather. Use a mild soap (hand soap is fine) and some warm water. Soak up the stain with a paper towel first, and then gently rub the warm, soapy cloth in a circular motion until the stain is gone. Gentle movements will prevent pilling at the area of the stain.

Step 2

Clean and dust regularly. To protect your office furniture and keep the leather looking fresh, it's important to remove dust and debris regularly. You don't want to use saddle soap, furniture polish, any type of oil, varnish or ammonia-based cleaners on your leather. This will damage and permanently stain your leather office furniture. Instead, use a clean cloth with a little bit of leather cleaner to add protection and shine to your leather office furniture.

Step 3

Avoid heat. It's not a good idea to place your leather office furniture near a heat source. Leather furniture can crack if it gets too dried out. So protect it by locating it away from anything hot, including radiators, baseboard heaters, furnace vents and even high-powered lights.

Step 4

Keep your leather office furniture away from the sun. Another important protective measure you can take for your leather office furniture is to keep it out of direct sunlight. Sunlight will not only fade the color of the leather, but it will also dry out the leather and make it more prone to cracking and general damage.

Step 5

Don't forget to recondition your leather! Leather office furniture can really take a beating from all the use it will get. If you want to protect it and keep it durable, cleaning is important but so is reconditioning. You need to add some natural oils back into the leather occasionally so that it will retain its supple feel. This product can be purchased at your local leather furniture store, and almost anywhere that sells cleaning products. Read the directions carefully, and allow the liquid to soak in before using the leather office furniture. Doing this even several times a year will greatly extend the life of your leather office furniture.
