How To Install Integral Pad Carpet
Integral pad carpet is a type of carpeting that has its own cushioned backing attached and bonded to the backside of the carpet, thereby eliminating the need for installing separate carpet padding. Also called cushion-backed carpet, integral pad carpet is ideal for applying directly over concrete floors as traditional padding must be secured to the floor with tacks and nails; integral pad carpet simply adheres to the concrete flooring. Integral pad carpet is also ideal for small areas such as bathrooms and closets as they can be placed and fitted on the floor without the need for carpet tape. To prevent the edges from curling, however, bigger pieces can be easily anchored with double-sided tape. There are different styles of integral pad carpet, including Berber and cut-pile, and it comes in a variety of textures and colors.
Step 1
Preparation
Just like installing any other type of carpet, you have to make sure that the flooring is completely clean and dry, is structurally sound, and has a relatively smooth or even surface. Clean the floor well making sure that there is no dust, dirt or sticky residue. This is especially important so that the tape can adhere to the floor tightly and firmly. Besides the integral pad carpet, you will need double-sided carpet tape that is two inches wide, a carpet cutter, a measuring tape or ruler, and a chalk for marking the carpet. If the installation requires seams, purchase a seam adhesive that is recommended for your type of carpet material, as well as five-inch carpet tape to use under the seam.
Step 2
Measuring and cutting
Measure the perimeter or area to be carpeted, taking both the width and length and adding an inch on each side of the measurement. For example, if the width is 80 inches, you should cut the carpet so that it is 82 inches wide accounting for the extra inch on both sides of the width. Do the same for the length. Cut the carpet accordingly using a chalk line to achieve a straight cut. Lay the carpet on the floor so that it covers the whole area.
Step 3
Finishing the edges
Once the carpet is smoothly in place, start with a corner section and be careful not to slide the carpet out of place. Pull back or lift one section of the carpet and apply a border of carpet tape underneath, directly onto the exposed floor. Lay the tape smoothly without any air or bubbles and remove the paper backing. Drop the carpet onto the tape and apply pressure on the carpet so that it will adhere, smoothing it with your hands. You can also get a rolling pin to aid you in smoothing out the carpet. Repeat this process for all the remaining sides of the carpet of the entire perimeter. After you have attached all sides to the floor, trim excess carpet from the edges. To finish, push the edges of the carpet under the baseboard. You can also place a shoe molding on top of the carpet edges and secure it by nailing it on the baseboard, not on the floor.
If the carpet requires seaming, install five-inch carpet tape underneath the seam, press the pieces of carpet into place and apply seam adhesive as directed on the product label.
